Joint Research Centre (JRC)

EC's Directorate-General Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides independent scientific and technical support for EU policymaking, works closely on the development of EU legislation with relevant EC services, such as DG GROW, DG ENV, DG SANTE... and liaises with non-EU and global scientific and standard- setting bodies as OECD or CEN and ISO. JRC comprises seven scientific Directorates. The Directorate of Health, Consumers and Reference Materials, located in Ispra, is actively involved in research into nanomaterials safety, identification and detection. JRC scientists support the development and implementation of EU policy for NM safety assessment.

Role in the project:

JRC is involved in several tasks related to the regulatory preparedness (WP6) (e.g., ensuring regulatory relevance or addressing safe- and sustainable-by design policy aspects), grouping and read-across developments (WP4), safe innovation approach e-infrastructure implementation (WP1), as well as in dissemination activities (WP8). In WP6, JRC is also leading the task on ensuring regulatory relevance, identifying regulatory needs for MCNMs and is responsible for related deliverable. In addition, JRC is part of the Steering Board of the project. Overall, JRC’s role in the project is important in scientific knowledge transfer and ensuring that SUNSHINE outcomes will contribute to the EU policy actions in the area of safety and sustainability, e.g., within the framework of EU’s chemicals strategy for sustainability towards a toxic-free environment, part of the European Green Deal priority.
